Our Achievements Since May 2007

 

We are proud of the achievements of the Labour run Council in Leicester, and on what our Labour Government is doing.

Here are some of our achievements:

  • We have launched the unique ONE Leicester 25 year strategy to make Leicester Britain's sustainable city

  • Highcross Shopping centre opened in September 2008 - the UK's most exciting new retail development, made possible by the labour Group

  • The Queen opened the Curve - Britain's bet new performing arts development

  • Our streets are cleaner with the Cleaner City Cleansing Team made possible with £200,000 of new investmet

  • City Wardens now tackle anti-social behaviour and contribute to our cleaner, safer seats

  • Community Meetings with usable budgets give people a real say in their local community

  • Opening hours at Southfields and Belgrave Libraries have been extended

  • New lighting has improved safety on Victoria Park

  • Empty houses are being brought back into use by two new empty homes officers

  • Fast food vans are banned from outside schools

  • Brought in a targeted free pest control service in parts of the city

  • Launched a consultation on the future of the exchange shopping precint in Eyres Monsell

  • Spent 50,000 improving security at Saffron Cemetary

  • Brought the Special Olympics to Leicester in 2009 - the only city to have hosted it twice

  • Launched a strategy to bring part of the 2012 Olympics to Leicester, and using Braunstone Leisure centre and Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium as training grounds

  • Welcomed the Prime Minister to Leicester on 4 occasions

  • 'Transforming Leicesters Schools' has invested £millions in the future of our children and young people, and will invest £millions more

  • Allocated funding for improvements to the building for Leicester Asian Youth Association

  • Major local improvements to pavements, verges and footpaths across the city and delivering pedestrianisation to the city centre

  • A new cycle delivery service for Leicester Market

  • Doubled the number of Christmas trees in the City Centre

  • Brought back the winter ice skating rink

  • New Christmas lights on Humberstone Gate

  • New Tenants And Leaseholderrs Forums give tenants new opportunities to influence service improvements and have their say

  • We saved the Sharma Women's centre from Closure with £30,000 extra funding

  • The new Leicester Compact is a landmark agreement promoting joint working between the City Council and voluntary organisations

  • Leicester was the European City Of Sport UK in 2008 - a unique accolade in the UK which recognises our commitment to sport

  • There is more funding to sustain Leicesters festivals and celebrations including Christmas and Diwali, and to provide new ones

  • Cossington Street Swimming Baths have been re-opened after a programme of majoe improvements

  • The Prime Minister launched free bus passes for the over 60s in Leicester

  • We opened a revamped St. Margaret's Bus Station that gives real imprvements to passengers

  • We reinstated the statue of the seamstress outside the City Rooms to celebrate part of Leicester's industrial heritage

  • We attracted the attenborough Collection od Picasso ceramics to Leicester which brought a record 70,000 visitors to New Walk Museum

  • We have put £4 million towards care for the elderly and vulnerable so that they can stay in their own homes

  • The ugly Haymarket bridge was a magnet for Anti-social behaviour.  We tore it down within weeks of coming back into power

  • The old city centre Post Office is now a one-stop-shop for citizens to get advice, information and help

  • Work is nearing completion on our new £21.5 million Digital Media Centre with three cinema screens, exhibition space, flats and workshops

  • Leading the biggest ever Football Foundation, football facilities development project that brings new facilities to communities across the city and is worth £10 million
