The Boundary Commission has today published details of its initial proposals to change the parliamentary boundaries to equalise the number of voters in each and to also reduce the number of MPs in the UK by 50 in time for the next general election in 2015.

The Labour Party opposed these changes on the basis that many people were not registered to vote despite being eligible and that the UK as a whole is not over represented electorally. The Tories have pushed these proposals through whilst at the same time increasing the number of unelected representatives in the House of Lords.

For Leicester, the Leicester South and East constituencies remain untouched and Leicester West has a proposal to add three wards from Blaby which are Winstanley & Fosse, Millfield and Ravenhurst.

Liz Kendall, MP for Leicester West, has cautiously welcomed the proposals for her constituency in the local press, given the parameters under which the Boundary Commission for England was working.

There is now a public consultation period for the next 10 weeks which people can submit their thoughts to online at the Boundary Commission website.
