Melissa March
I have been honoured to represent Knighton as part of a Labour Party team since 2019.
I grew up in Knighton and I’m proud to be raising my own young family in and around the same area.
I have been the cofounder and CEO of a charity since 2008. Learning for the Fourth Age believes “you’re never too old to learn” and work with people in care homes & nursing homes to prove this. I am a specialist in relationship centred care, dementia and meaningful activity.
I volunteer with cooperative children’s charity The Woodcraft Folk, nationally as a trustee and running weekly groups across the city.
I am a co-opted school governor at both Avenue Primary and Ellesmere College in Leicester.

I am particularly honoured to have been a Labour councillor for twelve years in the ward where I have lived since 1979. I’m a lifelong Labour voter because I believe it’s the only party which can overcome the disadvantages many people endure. I am currently Treasurer of Leicester South Constituency Labour Party; as well as my local branch.
I continue to work nationally as an educational psychologist, carrying out expert witness work with severely disabled children at the direction of the courts. I am frequently invited onto Radio Leicester to talk about subjects which affect children’s wellbeing and development.*
I love meeting local residents and help them whenever I can. Constituents can contact me by phone or email, or attend my monthly surgery about issues or problems. I take action immediately and draw on my good relationships with officers to get problems solved. I carry out regular street surgeries on Sunday afternoons to meet my constituents continually, not just when an election is taking place.
Some of my achievements:
- I helped to set up a drop-in/coffee morning along with my surgery to provide a meeting point for elderly or isolated people.
- I set up the popular monthly lunch club.
- I have been successful in tackling speed in Knighton, getting highways improvements, supporting appeals against planning decisions to conserve the special nature of the environment in Knighton; and supporting local initiatives.
- I am Chair of the Advisory Board for Millgate School.
- I have served as Chair of Adult Social Care and Housing; and Children’s, Young Persons’ and Schools’ scrutiny commissions. I have spent nine years as a member of the planning committee. Most recently I have served on Children’s scrutiny commission, the Audit and Risk committee and the Standards committee.

I have lived in Knighton as a Labour Party member for almost 30 years and raised my children here. It has been a privilege to serve as a councillor in Knighton for the past four years. In that time I have served on the following committees: Children & Young People, Health & Wellbeing, Planning, Licensing & Public Safety, Audit & Risk, Corporate Parenting, Employee Appeals, Economic Development, Transport and Climate Emergency.
Before I became a councillor I had worked as a science researcher, a self-employed lecturer and tutor. I also had a long managerial career working within Leicester City Council. I have been a parent governor at my children’s primary school and have volunteered at an after-school homework club. I have also volunteered at a local foodbank and at a drop-in for senior citizens and was secretary of Knighton Neighbourhood Forum.
Now retired but still very active I enjoy working as an environment volunteer in our parks and waterways across Leicester. I am a volunteer warden in Knighton Park, picking up litter and opening Knighton Spinney to the public on Sunday mornings. Most recently I have been volunteering every week in support of the Saving Saffron Brook project, for example clearing brambles and helping to plant hundreds of trees.
