Yasmin Surti
I was the first women to be elected onto the Executive Committee of the Federation of Muslim Organisations after almost three decades and I am involved in many local charities and organisations in varying capacities.
I am also involved in many interfaith and cross community initiatives and I am committed to working for all members of the community to ensure Leicester and its people maintain harmony and prosperity in the face of huge national and international challenges.
I currently work in the NHS but have almost 40 years’ local, regional and national experience of working in the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors to bring about change and improve the lives and experiences of vulnerable people and people with a range of disabilities and their families and continue to be a champion for equality and diversity.

I live in Stoneygate ward among diverse , vibrant & a great community. My children attended the local schools & colleges. I am a proud grandmother. My late husband was a dedicated councillor.
As a former councillor for many years, I am proud to have served the diverse communities of Leicester. I was one of the first Asian female primary school teachers. I have helped & supported many families & children when they arrived in Leicester. I became the first Asian female Lord Mayor in the UK. As chair & member of Leicester Council of Faiths I have worked passionately with the different communities (faith or non faith).
I have been dedicated to both the Labour Party’s values & the communities at large by helping & supporting them with various issues. Families are facing challenges & difficulties. The cost of living has had adverse impact on families. The NHS is in crisis . With my colleagues, we will hold regular ward surgeries & ward community meetings to listen to the issues raised by our constituents & businesses.
