Annette Byrne
I was born in Belgrave and have always lived in Leicester. I was educated at Rushey Mead School for Girls and from school went to work in the hosiery trade.
I have been a strong Labour Party supporter since I was old enough to vote and stood for election at the city council elections in 2007, when I was elected in the Abbey Ward.
I am a fierce advocate for Leicester and I work tremendously hard in my community to support and help local people. I have seen the Mowmacre Hill Estate grow over many years, once the smallest in Leicester, and back in the 1980’s, joined forces with local women to set up a youth club for both young girls and boys, which is still running today. .

I have lived in Abbey Ward for 11 years, raising 3 children and 2 step children who have attended many of the local schools in the area.
I have been a social housing tenant for 20 years. I am an avid housing campaigner, helping to bring about Labour’s 2019 housing manifesto policy; and working in my local area to advocate for tenants in housing need.
I have been the vice chair of a national housing campaign, have lobbied MP’s and held campaign surgeries in Parliament regarding housing issues both locally and nationally. I have volunteered with charities in the city helping those with criminal convictions and learning difficulties into meaningful employment. I also volunteer and collect for local food banks on a regular basis.
My experience and background does not end at housing. My experience with my SEND son has given me an extensive knowledge into the workings of SENDMH within the education of our city’s young people. I have previously advocated on behalf of children and families to ensure that families are supported, especially within the education system, and their voices are heard.
Being an MS sufferer, I understand the difficulties related to disability in all areas of life and I aim to raise awareness around inclusivity within the city council and our communities.
I have been involved in local and national politics since 2015 and have a very good knowledge and understanding of local government and its processes. I have actively partaken and contributed to a number of local initiatives that aim to improve the lives of people within our city.
